Viettel offers free internet access   2008-01-19 - VNS

Viettel Telecom said new ADSL internet subscribers would be given free internet access for three months in a bid to lure more users to its network.

HA NOI — Viettel Telecom said new ADSL internet subscribers would be given free internet access for three months in a bid to lure more users to its network.

The military-run firm said monthly fees for the service were just VND150,000.

Meanwhile, new subscribers to Viettel’s fixed-line telephone service would get their subscription fees waved for six months, the company said.

HCM City has 8.6m new phone subscribers

HCM CITY — HCM City had 8.6 million telephone subscribers in 2007, or 139 telephones for every 100 people, according to the city People’s Committee.

Of the total, 1.6 million were fixed-telephone subscribers - a year-on-year increase of 11.7 per cent; while 7 million were mobile phone subscribers - up 34.6 per cent over 2006.

Internet subscriptions increased 61.4 per cent to over 2 million.

Post and telecom services posted a total revenue of VND16 trillion (US$1 billion), up 33.38 per cent.

During the year, the city licensed 1,053 information technology businesses, bringing the total number of IT firms to 6,816, with registered capital of more than VND17 trillion.

The city garnered US$72 million from exporting software products in 2007.

FPT provides software to EVERON

HA NOI — FPT Information System Company has signed a US$300,000 contract to provide business administrative software to the wholly foreign-owned Everpia Viet Nam Company (EVERON) from South Korea.

Under the contract, FPT Information System, a subsidiary of the Financing and Promoting Technology Corporation, will help EVERON improve its management capacity and build a long-term strategy for the future.

The contract expires in August.

Juniper ‘well-positioned’ in market

HA NOI — Juniper claimed to be among the leading firms in a recently released report by Gartner’s entitled "Magic Quadrant for WAN Optimisation Controllers, 2007".

Gartner, an IT research and advisory firm, evaluated firms according to a strict set of criteria, such as their ability to execute strategies and the completeness of their vision.

Lenovo enters worldwide consumer PC market

HA NOI — Lenovo announced its entry into the global consumer PC market with the launch of its new notebook and desktop PC.

Lenovo’s new consumer-oriented IdeaPad notebooks and IdeaCentre desktops complement Lenovo’s ThinkPad notebooks and ThinkCentre desktops, the company said.

The notebooks, powered by Intel® Centrino® processors, combine facial-recognition technology with Dolby surround sound.
