Computer sales up in third quarter: IDC report   2008-12-23 - Thanh Nien

Vietnam’s personal computer market experienced 12.5 percent growth in the third quarter from a year earlier, according to a report by IDC, a subsidiary of the market research firm International Data Group.

During the quarter, 365,600 units were sold, 8.5 percent more than in the second quarter, the IDC report, which was released last week, said.

Sales rose in spite of the difficult economic conditions, including high inflation and an unstable foreign exchange rate, driven by the back-to-school sales period in mid August.

In the third quarter, Hewlett Packard (HP) was the market leader again, followed by Acer and Lenovo.

The report said shipments in the quarter could have been even higher if not for increased competition from lower-priced second-hand and refurbished computers.

Sales are expected to remain strong in the fourth quarter, with new products introduced, according to Nguyen My Phuong, Market Research Analyst at IDC Vietnam.

IDC said it expected to see growth in Vietnam’s personal computer market in the first half of next year as the economy recovered and demand for PCs increased from business and education sectors.
