Bilateral trade with US manages to top $15bil in 2008, despite crisis   2009-02-24 - VietNamNet/Viet Nam News

Two-way trade between Viet Nam and the US amounted to nearly US$15.3 billion in 2008, an increase of 23.61 per cent compared with the previous year, according to official figures released recently by the US Department of Commerce (DoC).

Vietnamese products obtaining high export growth to the US market were textile and garment items, with export value of $5.3 billion, a year-on-year increase of 19.97 per cent; wood products at $1.5 billion, up by 18.5 per cent; and footwear at $1.2 billion for an increase of 17.5 per cent over 2007.

Last year, Viet Nam's export turnover to the US amounted to $12.6 billion, a year-on-year increase of 19.6 per cent while the country's import value from the US reached $2.7 billion, up by 46.6 per cent compared with 2007.

Vietnamese products obtaining high export growth to the US market were textile and garment items, with export value of $5.3 billion, a year-on-year increase of 19.97 per cent; wood products at $1.5 billion, up by 18.5 per cent; and footwear at $1.2 billion for an increase of 17.5 per cent over 2007.

The lowest export turnover in Viet Nam's exports to the US was toys, sportswear and tools at $81 million. The commerce department said 14 of 15 major goods exported by Viet Nam to the US last year attained growth.

Vehicles and other means of transportation topped the list of the US's major exports to Viet Nam in 2008, at a turnover of $322 million for a year-on year increase of 30 per cent.

Viet Nam's import of meat products from the US shot up by 299.5 per cent over 2007 to reach $230 million last year.
