Hanoi hosts Vietnam-Japan economic forum   2009-03-03 - VOV

About 350 Vietnamese and Japanese businesses gathered in Hanoi on March 3 to discuss ways to develop the support industry and personnel training in Vietnam.

Addressing the forum, Minister of Planning and Investment Vo Hong Phuc affirmed the Vietnamese government’s resolve to develop the support industry, considering it “a breakthrough” in the rapid and sustainable development of major industries from now until 2020.

Vietnam will develop the support industry by mobilising the investment capacity of all economic sectors and especially strategic partners such as multinational economic groups, said Mr Phuc.

He underlined the need for small and medium-sized enterprises to develop human resources and proposed that Japan help Vietnam with training and the transfer of technology in this area.

The Japanese Ambassador to Vietnam, Mitsuo Sakaba, acknowledged Vietnam’s efforts to develop the support industry in Vietnam, but said that the industry has not received due care and attention.

According to him, this industry has a direct impact on the country’s future economic development as well as trade and investment ties between Vietnam and Japan. He recommended that Vietnam pour more investment into developing industries, especially the support industry to turn the country into a “strong network of production chains”.

Kyoshiro Ichikawa, a specialist from the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), who has been working in Vietnam for years, said that Vietnam will make a big step towards this goal if the support industry receives more attention from the government.

To achieve this, he proposed that Vietnam need to renew its thinking about leadership, quality and human resources training.

Eighty Japanese businesses from Kansai Economic Federation (Kankeiren) – the second largest economic federation in Japan – are on a visit to Vietnam to explore opportunities for cooperation in the country.
