Spanish, US firms to pour money into Chu Lai Airport   2009-04-18 - VietNamNet/VOV

Chu Lai International Airport.

The central province of Quang Nam has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with representatives from Spain’s Garuda Group, and the US Airis International Holdings LLC to implement a feasibility study for Chu Lai International Airport.

Nguyen Phuoc Thanh, deputy chairman of the provincial people’s committee, said that under the master plan ratified by the Government, Chu Lai Airport will have a total investment of  US$1 billion and it will be larger than Danang Airport.

The airport has a design annual capacity of 2.25 million passengers and 1.5 million tonnes of cargo by 2015 and 4.1 million passengers and 5 million tonnes of cargo by 2025, according to the master plan.

Garuda and Airis will join hands to design, finance, construct and operate the airport in the form of BOT (build-operate-transfer). The project feasibility will include an in-depth outline of future planning and building stages.

Nguyen Trong Nguyen, director of Airis Vietnam, said the two sides chose Chu Lai because it is an important gate to the centre of the country and it lies near Dung Quat and Chu Lai economic zones, Hoi An – a famous tourist spot – and Chu Lai seaport.
