Vietnam’s July coffee exports rose 7.7 percent from the same month last year to an estimated 70,000 tons, or 1.17 million bags, the government said on Friday.

The General Statistics Office also estimated coffee exports in the first 10 months of the October 2008 to September 2009 crop year were 1.048 million tons, or 17.47 million 60- kilogram bags, a rise of 19.2 percent from a year earlier.

The office revised down the export volume in June to 78,000 tons from the 85,000 tons previously estimated.

The coffee crop year in Vietnam, the world’s second-largest producer after Brazil, runs between October and September.

Revenue from the commodity in the first seven months of the calendar year ending July dropped an estimated 15.7 percent to US$1.19 billion, the statistics office said in its monthly report.

Coffee is the country’s second-largest agro-product export item in terms of value, after rice.

Vietnam may still have around 2.8 million bags left unsold, after deducting shipments so far this  crop year and 1 million bags used for domestic consumption. The next harvest is due to start in late October in the Central Highlands coffee belt.

Traders have estimated the previous harvest that ended in January at 19.5 million bags and the stock carried forward from the previous crop was 1.8 million bags.

Last month, the US Department of Agriculture forecast Vietnam would export 18.8 million bags from the current 2008/2009 crop year, making up about 20 percent of the world’s total.
