Tet markets in HCM City enjoy stable prices   2010-02-11 - VOV

Ho Chi Minh City supermarkets, department stores and even street shops are overcrowded these days but there have been no price fevers thanks to abundant goods.

Hypermarkets such as Big C and Coop Mart have seen a surge in their number of visitors. From 15:00 until 21:00 every day, people have to hustle selecting goods before queuing up for a long time.

Supermarkets have also had to lengthen their opening hours to serve their clients.

Duong Thi Quynh Trang, Big C’s Director for External Relations, says the number of shoppers at Big C has increased by 30-40 percent against the same period last year. However, prices have not been raised.

Tran Dong Nhut, the owner of a confectionery stall at An Dong Market, says the prices of most foods remain stable, for example, water-melon seeds priced at VND100,000 per kg, and soft coconut jam priced at VND90,000 per kg.

Nhut says that the prices of most foods in wholesale markets are also stable, some even being offered with a 3-5 percent discount. However, pork prices have increased slightly by VND2,000-3,000 per kg.

Local citizens are also rushing to fashion shops and pavement stands, which offer massive discounts. Many T-shirts and shorts are sold for just VND30,000-50,000 per piece.
